In early July of 2023, the Reykjanes Peninsula (around 20 km or 12 mi Southeast of Iceland's International Airport KEF) began experiencing intense seismic activity. Thousands of earthquakes with a some measuring around 3, 4, and 5 in magnitude. The experts said this is the same pattern they saw in previous years, here around the Fagradalsfjall Volcano area, before eruptions took place. They estimated it could happen any day!
At 4:40PM on July 10th, shortly after a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, the ground burst open and lava began shooting out of the earth. This is the 3rd eruption in this area in the last 28 months!
