Hey guys, we’re talking about painting your cabinets in your home, RV, or wherever and what NOT to do. We had never done this before and Jenna was insisting. Something I love about Jenna is she goes for it. Something that’s frustrating about Jenna is she just goes for it…
Admittedly, I was not into the idea and thought the brown cabinets were just fine, but of course I agreed to help if she facilitated the project. We made about every mistake you can and miraculously, it turned out ok and we’re happy we did it. Let’s go!
1. Do NOT underestimate the job – it’s not rocket science, but it’s still a big job and you’re smart to watch some videos and think through the process.
2. Do NOT be in a rush – painting takes time and patience. There will be 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint. It takes hours to dry and spreading an even coat, especially painting the nooks and crannies is pretty tedious.
3. Do NOT cheap out on paint brushes – you don’t need the nicest ones, but also we encourage you to spend more than the $3 or whatever that we did. Our cheap foam brushes were ripping and the little pieces were getting in the paint. You’ll want a decent roller too.
4. Do NOT forget to buy primer- this is very important because it helps seal the surface and improve paint adhesion.
5. Do NOT forget to clean and lightly sand your surfaces before beginning.
6. Do NOT forget to stir the paint – this helps you get that smooth finish.
7. Do NOT let spiders crawl on wet paint – If you have the luxury of doing some of this indoors and letting stuff dry inside, do it!
8. Do NOT leave cabinet doors out to dry on a windy fall day – we spent some time picking out leaves out of wet paint and repainting to smooth it all out.
9. Do NOT wear regular clothing – paint gets on stuff and it doesn’t really come out.
10. Do NOT get discouraged when the first coat looks bad.
11. Do NOT forget to put down towels or tarps.
12. Do NOT wear jewelry- please take your wedding ring off!
13. Do NOT forget that you’ll smell paint for awhile.
14. Do NOT forget to label cabinet doors when you remove them – pretty self explanatory but saves you some frustration when they aren’t all exactly the same.
15. Do NOT leave the paint can open – yea we ended up kicking over an open paint can and had to buy special paint remover to clean the driveway we were working from.
Last tip, we really struggled when we were painting the edges and got paint on our floor and ceiling, so definitely consider using painters tape.
